Mercer, PA August 12, 2017. Erick Rudolph takes advantage of his front row start, thanks to the four-car invert in the feature, and grab his first BRP Modified Tour win at Mercer Raceway Park. Rex King Jr. takes home a second-place finish, while Jeremiah Shingledecker finishes third in the Big Block vs Small Block battle. Thirty Modifieds filled the pits at Mercer Raceway Park on a gorgeous Saturday night. Thirteen small blocks would be in house to battle the big blocks. Lonny Riggs the only small block to win this challenge in years past. The top two in points, and the only two feature winners this season, would start on the front row at Mercer Raceway Park for the 35-lap feature. This is the BRP Modified Tours (Modified Tour Inc.) second visit to Mercer this season, with Rex King Jr. taking the first win back in March during the Chiller Thriller. Rex King Jr. on the pole had Erick Rudolph on his outside at the start. When the green flag dropped, King Jr. would get a good jump and the early lead going through turns one and two. Before the leaders could cross the start-finish line, Jimmy Holden would spin on the backstretch, leading to a complete restart. On the second attempt at the start, Rudolph would grab the lead this time. Chris Haines, Jeremiah Shingledecker and Lonny Riggs would be battling hard behind the leaders. By lap five, the leaders were approaching lap traffic. On lap seven, Rex King Sr., a six-time Tour Champion, would slow on the backstretch and stop just before the pits, bringing out the caution. Just after the restart, several cars were collected in an accident in turn four. Kyle Fink, Rodney Beltz, Jason Sines, Shannon Whaley and Shawn Kozar were all involved, and all could rejoin the tail of field. The top five would be Rudolph, King Jr., Shingledecker, Riggs and Chrysler when the caution flag flew. Shingledecker and Riggs would battle for third with Riggs grabbing that position and moving up to challenge King Jr. before the caution flew for Brad Rapp stopping along the front stretch wall. On the restart, Riggs, running a small block, would put pressure on King Jr. again for second. By lap 24, the front five would spread out a little before Shingledecker and Riggs would battle side-by-side again for third, with Garrett Krummert moving up to fifth and getting in on the battle. Fink, who was involved in the lap 8 incident, would be able to make it back into the top ten with around 10 to go. The rest of the laps would stay under green, and Erick Rudolph would pick up his sixth Modified Tour win in a row, and his first at Mercer Raceway Park. Rex King Jr. would come home second. Jeremiah Shingledecker, Garrett Krummert and Lonny Riggs would round out the top five. The Modified Tour will make a stop at the McKean County Fairground in Smethport, PA on Wednesday, August 16th before finishing out the season at the New Stateline Speedway (Busti, NY) on Friday, September 8th.
