Ricky Richner Wins King Memorial Modified Tour Event at Sharon Speedway

Posted by The Modified Tour Inc. on September 16, 2013 at 10:15 PM

By: Mike Leone

(Hartford, OH) Sharon Speedway hosted the annual “Apple Festival Nationals” on a chilly gall weekend. Friday featured preliminary events on a dreary night with drizzle falling throughout much of the late afternoon and evening, while Saturday brought clear and cool skies. A season-high 163 cars participated in the successful event.

Ricky Richner has been making the long drive down to Sharon Speedway every week this season from his home in Niagara Falls, New York. He’s been close to victory on several occasions this year including a few weeks ago when Rex King, Jr. stole one away from him in lapped traffic at the finish line. On Saturday night, the DIRTcar “358” Modified standout picked a perfect night for his first career Sharon win capturing the 35-lap $3,500 to win “Russ King Memorial” BRP Tour Governor Insurance Agency big-block win.

“I knew I had a good tire right from the start,” explained the 53-year-old veteran. “I knew Rex was getting slow at the end and we were getting faster on the outside. They started bumping and banging so I figured I’d let them settle their differences and then get after them. We usually run 35 laps at Ransomville (Speedway) so we’re used to that. It was a great race. We’ve been coming a long ways every Saturday and finally got one. I have to thank my entire crew and all my sponsors.”

Even though Richner started from the pole, it was fellow “358” racer Eric Gabany leading the opening lap. Following a caution for Carl Murdick, King passed both Richner and Gabany for the lead on lap two as Jeremiah Shingledecker, Tom Glenn and Dave Murdick were all able to get by Richner for third, fourth, and fifth respectively.

Shingledecker, who started sixth and won his first Sharon feature of the season last week, looked strong again as he passed Gabany for second on lap four, but following a restart on lpa six lost second and third to Gabany and Murdick. Shingledecker would then spin in turn four on lap seven collecting four other racers and ended his night.

Back under green, Murdick passed Gabany for second. Richner got himself back in contention when he passed Gabany for third on lap nine. Murdick closed in on King on lap 10 and then by lap 17 Richner joined in making it a three-car race for the lead. Lapped traffic came into play on lap 19 as action really heated up. Richner was able to make the move on Murdick for second on lap 20.

One more caution slowed the event with 35 laps scored setting up a 10-lap shoot-out to the finish. Richner hounded King every lap and eventually found a nice line on the top in turns one and two. Lap after lap Richner would get closer and closer and finally had enough momentum to make the pass stick racing off the outside of turn four on lap 33. Richner led the final three laps in his Jetport Restaurant/Lazy Lakes Camping Resort-sponsored #26 to hold off King by 0.928. Richner becomes the 15th different winner in the 28 “Russ King Memorial” events.

King missed out on his first win in the event as he had to settle for second. Gabany matched his best career Sharon finish from May 4 in third. BRP Tour point leader, Chad

Brachmann was fourth after starting 11th leading a trio of New York racers across the line as 17th starting Randy Chrysler was fifth and Justin Wright sixth. Rounding out the top 10 were Jim Weller, Jr., Kevin Hoffman, 26th starting Chris Haines and 22nd starting Bob Warren. Richner, Weller, and Dave Murdick won the heat races over the 30-car field, while Carl Murdick won the B main. Wright set fast time on Friday with a 16.476.

Feature Finish: Ricky Richner, Rex King, Jr., Eric Gabany, Chad Brachmann, Randy Chrysler, Justin Wright, Jim Weller, Jr., Kevin Hoffman, Chris Haines, Bob Warren, Joe Kubiniec, Steve Barr, Mike Turner, Rick Regalski, Mark Frankhouser, Dave Murdick, Brad Rapp, Tom Glenn, Erik Martin, Don Brown, Rob Kristyak, Rick Ryder, Jeremiah Shingledecker, Steve Feder, Tom Mattocks, Carl Murdick, Roger Chrysler, Dillon Barr, DNS: Rex King, Sr., Ralph McBride.

Dave Murdick came out on top of a wild night of DIRTcarBig-Block Modified racing for his third straight win on the circuit.  LikeSodeman, Murdick became the fifth different "Lou Blaney Memorial"winner in as many Modified events and pocketed $2,000 in the 30-lap BRPTour-sanctioned, Governor Insurance Agency feature.  Murdick's win adds tosome $3,700 won

last weekend at Lernerville Speedway and Mercer Raceway Park!

"I was running the bottom, but I wanted to be on top but couldn't get thechance to get up there," explained the 50-year-old Butler, Pa.native when asked about missing the big accident.  "Low and behold itturned out to be the right spot.  Racing with Lou (Blaney) was quite anhonor and when you beat him you knew you beat the best, but that wasn't veryoften.  I have to thank my entire crew- without them none of this would bepossible."

Rob Curtis overtook Max Smoker on the start and quickly pulled away on lap twoas Steve Feder moved into second.  Rex King, Jr. started sixth, but washalfway to the front in three laps when he passed Smoker. "Cooter's" father, King, Sr., followed two laps later taking fourthfrom Smoker.

After a pair of cautions with five laps scored, both Kings raced past Feder forsecond and third on laps six and seven respectively.  Five more laps werecompleted before the race was slowed when Jeff Schaffer couldn't make it offthe speedway.  All hell broke loose on the ensuing restart. The elder Kingdove by his son "Cooter" and tried to get by leader Curtis enteringthree.  The two made contact and resulted in at least a 15-carpile-up.  King, Sr. got the worst of it taking a series of flips for thesecond straight BRP Tour event.  All drivers were okay.

When the carnage was cleared, Brad Rapp inherited the lead over Jimmy Holden,Murdick, and Kevin Hoffman.  Back under green flag racing, the ninthstarting Murdick passed Holden for second on the restart with Hoffman followingin third.  Rapp's lead would only last a lap as Murdick took over on lap12 for what would be the winning move.

Rapp remained within striking distance over the next 17 laps until a cautionfor Dillion Barr with 29 laps scored.  BRP Tour point leader, ChadBrachmann, was involved in the big accident and worked his way back forwardgetting past Rapp for second when racing resumed on lap 30;

however, the event's final caution was displayed when Barr and Carl Murdickmade contact setting up a five-lap shootout to the finish.

New Yorkracers Jimmy Phelps and Justin Wright passed Rapp on laps 31 and 32 for thirdand fourth respectively.  Murdick now had three Empire Stateracers that were all caught up in the big accident on his heels, but he hadenough to hold off the trio in his Steve's Auto Body-sponsored, Dunk'sCompetition Engines-powered #61.  It was Murdick's second Sharon win of

the season and eighth of his career, but first since May 18.

Brachmann was second in his first appearance of the season.  Phelps wasthird in his first ever Sharonvisit with 17th starting Wright and Rapp completing the top five.  Sixththrough 10th were Rob Kristyak, Steve Barr, Eric Gabany, Bob Warren, and MikeTurner.  Heat victors were

Brachmann, Jeremiah Shingledecker, Curtis, and Feder.  Wright and JoeKubiniec won the last chance B mains.

Mercer, PA (August 17, 2013): DaveMurdick continued his hot streak, picking up the big win in the annual visit ofthe BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour to the shortest track on the circuit, MercerRaceway Park. Murdick's win continued the domination by the Big Block Modifiedsover the Approved Toilet Rentals 358 Modifieds that race weekly at thespeedway.

Murdickwas pleased with his win in the BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified feature. His carrecently came back from the Troyer shop, and it has been fast ever since."The track was good and racy tonight, and I enjoyed it." AlthoughMurdick was able to work all over the track, he made the most of the outsidegroove. "I didn't think there was going to be an outside groove, but wewere able to make that work."

"Weneeded a caution there at the end," said Brad Rapp. He was closing fast, but ran out of laps. "I think we would have had something for Dave, as thecar was working really good, but the last 25 going green didn't help me."

Onedriver who wished things had ended one lap sooner was Chad Brachmann. He lostsecond by an eyelash to Rapp. "I didn't think he got me at the line, but Iguess the transponders don't lie." Brachmann was relieved to get third, though. "I'm happy to come out of this with a top three finish; we didn'thave the best car here by far."

WithSteve Barr and Joe Kubiniec on the front row for the start of the 30 lapper, presented by Schaffers Oil Company, the field charged off turn four, butseveral of the machines did not make it to the starting line, as car in themiddle of the pack began to check up. Some drivers took evasive action into theinfield.

Thesecond time, the field got away cleanly, with Kubiniec seizing the lead overEric Gabany. As Kubiniec came off turn four to complete lap one, some of theracers behind him got impatient, and New Yorker Phil Vigneri spun to theinside, clipping a utility tire as he left the track. Corner workers had toflee Vigneri's machine, but everybody got away safety.

Kubiniec and Gabany led the wayfor another circuit before another caution was displayed. That delayed theonslaught of Gabany, who was looking to Kubiniec's inside coming through theturns.

Theracers ran one more lap before the red flag waived. This time, it was forfive-time BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour champion, Rex King, Sr., who flippedhis car twice in turn two. Several other cars were involved. King's mount wasfinished for the evening, but he walked away unscathed.

Two morelaps were finished before the final stoppage of the race. During this shortstint, Gabany slipped into the lead. Kyle Fink, who was running in the top fiveat the time, was the culprit. Several others were collected, with significantdamage to Skip Moore, Rob Curtis and others. Kubiniec's night also came to anearly end, as he sun alone several yards further down the speedway from themajor incident in turn four. Curtis, Fink, and Kubiniec retired from the event.

Whenracing resumed, the remaining 25 laps were run off without incident. Gabany ledthe way to the green flag, with the series' points leader, Chad Brachmann, andDave Murdick lined up in the row behind him. Track favorite Jimmy Holden wasfourth.

Theleaders were running single file, but from sixth on back, the rest of the carswere two and three wide fighting for positions.

After ahandful of laps, Murdick assumed second. He then began to close in on Gabany. When he reached Gabany's rear bumper, Murdick kept looking to the inside for aplace to pass. As the leaders were racing through turn four on lap 19, Gabanyslipped a little further out of the groove, and Murdick powered off the cornerwith the advantage.

Brachmann moved into second threelaps later, and began to close in on Murdick, who was stuck behind some lappedcars. Meanwhile, Brad Rapp was charging on the high side. He had climbed from17th on the grid to the top five, and he was looking for more.

With Murdick and Brachmannleading, Rapp worked his way to third. He closed quickly on the lead duo.Murdick pulled away by a car length or two, as Rapp continued to reel inBrachmann.

As Murdick swept under thechecker, Rapp was on the charge again, He rolled into turn three on the outsideand pulled even with Brachmann. Rapp grabbed the spot at the finish line byjust a fraction of a second.

RonCartwright crossed in fourth, with Randy Chrysler finishing fifth. Like Rapp,he also came from the middle of the pack at the start.  Gabany slipped to sixth in the final tally.Jimmy Holden placed seventh, taking the honors of being the highest finishingMercer regular. Kevin Hoffman, J.R. McGinley and Jeremiah Shingledeckercompleted the top ten.

There were four heats for theBRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour event. The winners were Rex King, Sr., JeremiahShingledecker, Kevin Hoffman, and Frankie Guidace, sporting a "big"Small Block. Brad Rapp and Rob Curtis were victorious in the twin B Mains.

Scattered showers were predicted all day and a brief, light shower passed through the area early in the day but at race time the sky was beautiful with the thermometer in the upper seventies. During intermission one of the best fireworks displays in the area was presented by "Fireworks by Gibson" of Titusville. Ricky Rickner led flag to flag for the win in a race that saw several cautions and two red flags, one for a flip and one for a pileup that had the track blocked.

At halfway the order was Rickner, Haines, Barr, Kevin Hoffman, and Brad Rapp. As the leaders took the halfway signal Brad Rapp and Chad Brachmann, the tour point leader got hooked nose to tail on the front straight slowing suddenly. Unable to slow in time, Rex King, Sr. got into the rear of Kyle Fink who had slowed to avoid contact, causing King, Sr. to flip one and a half times at the end of the straight. King was uninjured in the accident. A second red flag was thrown the next lap after the restart when seven cars piled up in turn one, blocking the track. Two more cautions were necessary to complete the event with six laps remaining. Rickner went on to the win over Kevin Hoffman, who got by Haines for second with five to go. On the final lap Chad Brachman got by Haines on the final straightaway to finish third.  Ron Cartright rounded out the top five.
